Sir Charles Baskerville's passing at the manor house entrance is attributed to natural causes by Doctor Mortimer, yet Sherlock Holmes suspects a centuries-old family curse may be responsible. The mystery deepens as Holmes dispatches Dr. Watson to accompany Sir Henry, the deceased's nephew, to the estate, instructing Watson to monitor any suspicious activities. Upon arrival, Watson documents eerie phenomena both within the estate and across the surrounding moors, reporting back to Holmes about the unfolding threats to Sir Henry's safety. The film's narrative centers on Holmes' race against time to uncover the truth, while questioning whether the culprit is Dr. Mortimer, neighbor Stapleton, butler Barryman, reclusive Frankland, or a mysterious wild man. Though this film serves as an effective introduction to the Rathbone-Bruce Holmes series, it falls short of capturing the depth of subsequent entries. The production could have embraced a darker, more foreboding atmosphere, and the conclusion would benefit from greater narrative confrontation, yet it delivers engaging entertainment. Despite lackluster romantic chemistry between Greene and Barrie, the cast's skillful portrayal of red herring characters elevates the film's quality. Rating: 8/10.
